Google runs the largest ad platform on earth. If you can run paid search, you will always have work — agencies, freelance, and in-house teams all hire for this skill year-round. Skillshop is Google's official training hub, and every certification there is free.

Which Specialty to Start With

Start with Google Ads Search. It is the foundation. Display, Video, Shopping, and Measurement build on the same account structure, bidding, and attribution concepts. Search first, then branch.

The six available specializations

  1. Search — keyword-based text ads (start here)
  2. Display — banner and visual ads across the Google Display Network
  3. Video — YouTube ads, skippable and non-skippable
  4. Shopping — product-feed ads for e-commerce
  5. Measurement — conversion tracking, attribution, GA4 integration

The Measurement exam is the easiest of the six and doubles as prep for your GA4 cert in Section 5. Knock it out right after Search.

Google Ads certifications expire every 12 months. Renew by retaking the exam — takes ~45 minutes and keeps the badge active.

Everyone has GA4. Almost nobody knows how to use it.

Universal Analytics shut down in July 2023. Every company had to migrate to GA4, and most did it in a panic. That means the person on a marketing team who can pull a funnel report or build an exploration is the person who keeps the team out of the dark.

GA4 ≠ Universal Analytics

GA4 is event-based, not session-based. Most outdated tutorials on YouTube are teaching UA concepts that do not exist anymore. Learn GA4 from Google directly — Skillshop is the source.

Facebook and Instagram are where the small-to-mid-size business ad dollars still live. Local gyms, DTC brands, course creators, restaurants — they run Meta ads, and they hire people who can manage the account without torching the budget. Free vs Paid

The courses and study materials are free. The Professional Certification Exam costs around $150 and is only worth it once you have real account experience. For the resume, the free course completion badges are enough.
